That Asian Thing Showcase
"That Asian Thing Showcase" is a one night affair featuring musically talented Asian American artists associated with "That Asian Thing" documentary. "That Asian Thing" documentary is a film sought out to expose savvy Asian American artists that are attempting to break the barrier known as mainstream America. This project is based in Chicago, IL, to represent an underrated Asian American community. By displaying these skillful artists, the younger generation of Asians and Asian Americans can fulfill a sense of missing role models that aren't in the current eye of mediated entertainment. This movie confronts issues dealing with identity misplacement, assimilation, the "model minority" myth, and defining mainstream culture. "That Asian Thing" will demonstrate an unheard race and reveal an underlying evolution from an untapped pool of talent.
As a grand finale to the taping of "That Asian Thing," an event featuring a handful of the artists within the film will give that younger generation a personal experience. The event, fittingly named "That Asian Thing Showcase," will star 3 acts with guest performances. The three acts are:
4 Sons of the Orient - Hailing from Jacksonville, FL, this R&B vocal group made their move in 2000. By luck of chance, they spotted Duron Jones of the hip hop, R&B group 112 in an airport. Not letting an opportunity pass them by, they sang a cappella for him. Noticing pure talent, Jones followed up on this find and produced a couple of tracks for the Sons. After getting some airplay in Atlanta of their single, "Crazy," becoming recognized couldn't come sooner. Putting their personal lives on hold to pursue music full time, they felt it was necessary to move forward when society wasn't ready for an Asian American boy band. They dispersed in 2003. "That Asian Thing Showcase" will be there one night reunion performance!

Stephen Munoz - This primary acoustic folk singer has the musical talent to play an insurmountable number of instruments without any formal lessons. Self taught to play the guitar, piano, organ, harmonica, melodica, bass, drums, banjo, mandolin, etc. Stephen was able to jump into any band that needed a specific "piece to their puzzle." After band hopping, he is currently the keyboardist for the Midstates and performs solo on a regular basis. With his exceptional range in musical techniques, he can produce electronica beats for one track and sing an Irish folk song the next. This Asian American resonates the sounds of Bob Dylan and Elliot Smith.

IBU (Inspired By U) - Deemed by Power 92.3 FM as "Asians with Soul," these talented young vocal artists have compiled a seemingly never ending list of achievements. Participants of the New York International Music Festival in 2004, they overcame 300 artists to be voted as the best R&B Group and then followed up as the R&B Group of the year in 2005. The previous year, IBU won the state sponsored Chicago Music Opportunity Project. Within the same year, they performed at the Bud Billiken Parade and the Chicago Music Awards. With their recognition, the group has been able to perform with multiple American Idol finalists as Jennifer Hudson and Jordan Segundo. Their music has been escalating the charts in various stations across the nation. Come July of this year, IBU will be featured on MTV2 On the Rise.
